Common ENT – Head & Neck Procedures

Tonsillectomy

Tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the tonsils. It is a common procedure to treat infection and inflammation of the tonsils (acute tonsillitis).

Adenoidectomy

Adenoidectomy is the surgical removal of adenoids, which are lymphoid tissues that are located at the back of the nose, near the tonsils.

Myringotomy and Ventilation Tube Insertion

Myringotomy is a surgical procedure whereby a tiny incision is made in the ear drum to remove middle ear fluid to allow ventilation in the middle ear.

Myringoplasty

Myringoplasty is a surgical procedure to repair a perforation in the ear drum.

Mastoidectomy

Mastoidectomy is a surgical procedure for patients with chronic ear infections which remove infected cells in the mastoid region.

Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that helps to straighten the nasal septum. The nasal septum is the partition between the nasal cavities and should run down the centre of the nose. In some cases, it may deviate into one of the nasal cavities and block the air flow. Septoplasy is then recommended to help patients breathe better.

Septorhinoplasty

Septorhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects the external functional aspect of the nose eg. fixing of crooked noses.

Turbinate Reduction Surgery

There are three turbinates (inferior, middle, and superior) on each side of the nose. In some cases, these turbinates cause nasal obstruction and affect our breathing. Turbinate surgery corrects this problem by reducing the turbinate size and allowing more air flow through the nasal passage.

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)

FESS is an operation recommended for patients suffering from chronic or recurrent acute sinusitis. It is a minimally invasive surgical technique that helps restore sinus ventilation and normal function.

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is a standard surgical procedure to treat moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. The tonsils and excess tissues at the back of the throat are removed to widen the airway.

Head & Neck Surgeries

Thyroidectomy

Thyroidectomy is the surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland – a hormone producing gland that regulates the body’s metabolism. For patients suffering from thyroid cancer, a biopsy and ultrasound are first done and surgeons will evaluate the results before recommending surgery.

Parotidectomy

Parotidectomy is the surgical removal of the parotid gland – a salivary gland near the ear. The main purpose of this procedure is to remove tumours arising in the parotid gland.

Lymph Node Excision Biopsy

This procedure is commonly used to evaluate suspicious lymph nodes.

Head & Neck Cancer Surgery

This surgery can be open or minimally invasive. The minimally invasive surgeries are Endoscopic Nasopharyngectomy for selected patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma and Transoral Surgery (through the mouth) for selected patients with cancers in the throat, tongue or voice box.

Neck Dissection Surgery

This procedure involves block removal of cancer containing lymph nodes in the neck.

Reconstructive Surgery

Repair of defects in the Head and Neck region after cancer surgery to encourage healing and improve function. The tissues used to perform the reconstruction can be free flaps (taken from other parts of the body by reconnecting the blood vessels) or pedicled flaps (rotated form adjacent areas).

Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery

  • Rhinoplasty and facial surgery:
Repair of deformities of the external nose that cause problems such as nasal congestion, breathing difficulty and visible deformities on the face
  • Management of cranio-maxillofacial trauma:
Repair of injuries on the face, such as injury to soft tissue, as well as fractures as a result of trauma
  • Reconstructive surgery of the face, head and neck:
Repair of defects on the face (following removal of tumours or lumps) that require surgical reconstruction (performed in collaboration with Plastic Surgery)
  • Excision and reconstruction of facial lumps and bumps (eg. skin malignancies):
Surgical removal of lumps, both benign and cancerous, followed by reconstruction if necessary
