“Curious Evergreens” is a set of 15 murals illustrated by visual artist duo, William Sim and Lush Tan, for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) rooms in Pod 2 of Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. The series serves as a study of nature, a theme found often in the artists’ work with a tinge of quirkiness. Its visual format is conceived as a design thinking and composed specifically to soften the clinical feel of the room with its angular corners. The artwork serves to bring the visual of nature in through its windows, and along with it the calming and healing effects of its presence. Colours were carefully selected, taking into consideration a patient’s mood and feelings while staying in the ICU. Each piece of mural is hand-painted to ensure uniqueness and is itself an original work of art.

This project aims to create an oasis of calm amidst the whimsical landscapes of quirky plants and animal motifs that adorn the walls, breaking the common association of ICU wards being a sterile and harsh environment, and in turn, recreating a conducive healing environment that would inspire hope and optimism amongst patients and staff.
