Ophthalmology

JurongHealth Campus’ Ophthalmology service offers up-to-date and comprehensive eye care for our patients. Our doctors treat a wide spectrum of eye conditions including age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy and corneal diseases.

Common Eye Conditions Treated at JurongHealth Campus

Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye. As the lens is normally clear, the clouding will affect one’s vision. Cataracts are common in older people and they tend to complain of blurred vision, similar to that when one looks through a fogged-up window.

Common symptoms are:

  • Blurred vision
  • Colours that seem faded
  • Glare
  • Poor night vision
  • Double vision
  • Frequent prescription changes in your eye wear

Age-related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration is a condition that destroys one’s vision because of damage to the macula – the central part of the retina. The condition is commonly associated with ageing and can make it difficult for patients to read or recognise faces. Age-related macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness in developed countries and typically affects those above 50 years of age.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disorder of the eye whereby increased eye pressure causes optic nerve damage. Vision in the eye is gradually affected, sometimes with no noticeable change at all until severe visual impairment occurs. This will eventually lead to complete blindness if left untreated.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a common eye disease affecting individuals who are diabetic. This condition occurs when tiny blood vessels inside the retina, the light sensitive area at the back of the eye, are damaged. If left untreated, diabetic retinopathy may result in blindness.

Dry Eyes

Dry eyes is a common condition that occurs when one’s eyes are not adequately lubricated by tears. The surface of the eye has a layer of tears that keeps the eye moist constantly. When the quantity and / or quality of the tears is abnormal, the surface of the eye will get dry easily, resulting in irritation of the eyes.

Refractive Errors

Refractive errors occur when there is an error in the focusing of the light that comes into the eye. This causes reduced visual acuity and objects look blurred.

Common refractive errors are:

  • Myopia (near-sightedness)
  • Hyperopia (long-sightedness)
  • Astigmatism

Trauma

The eyes are vulnerable to external injury. All structures of the eye, including the eyelids, cornea, retina and nerves, can be damaged. Timely and appropriate treatment can reduce the risk of permanent vision loss.

General Eye Check-up

Correction of refractive errors eg. hyperopia (long-sightedness), myopia (short-sightedness), astigmatism and presbyopia

Cataracts

  • Comprehensive eye examination conducted by ophthalmologists
  • Cataract assessment and surgery with intraocular lens implantation (premium intraocular lens such as toric IOL, multi-focal IOL)

Glaucoma

  • Glaucoma diagnosis and assessment using technologically advanced devices such as the Humphrey Visual Field Analyser, Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) and Optical Coherence Tomographer (OCT)
  • Medical treatment
  • Laser/surgical treatment

Cornea Problems

  • Consultation and treatment for corneal problems
  • Treatment of trauma to cornea eg. chemical splashes, corneal abrasions, etc.
  • Pterygium surgery i.e. removal of abnormal tissue from the cornea and sclera (the white of the eye)

Medical & Surgical Retina

  • Diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and macular disorders
  • Surgery and treatment of retina detachment
  • Treatment and management of hereditary chorioretinal disorders and central serous chorioretinopathy
  • Treatment of posterior segment inflammatory disorders
  • Treatment of retinal vascular diseases

Oculoplastics & Orbit Service

  • Correction of droopy eyelids and abnormal lid positions eg. in-turning and out-turning eyelashes
  • Rehabilitation of patients with bulgy eyes due to thyroid eye disease
  • Tumour resection and reconstruction
  • Management of orbital fractures due to accidents
  • Plastic surgery on eyelids
  • Treatment of facial nerve palsy
  • Removal of lumps and bumps in the eyelids
  • Functional and aesthetic Botox injections
  • Aesthetic eyelid surgery

Uveitis

  • Treatment of inflammation in the uvea – the vascular layer of the eye sandwiched between the retina and the white of the eye (sclera)
  • Investigation into infections, injury and autoimmune disorders that may be associated with uveitis
