Biosketch

Dr Suresh has been the Head of the department of Medicine at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital since January 2020. He is a senior consultant in rheumatology.  

Dr Suresh graduated in 1992 from the University of Madras, obtained his MD degree in 1997 and the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2000. He trained in rheumatology at Edinburgh and obtained the certificate of completion of specialist training (CCST) in 2005. In 2009, he was conferred the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London. He worked as a Consultant Rheumatologist in the United Kingdom for seven years, before moving to Singapore in June 2012.

Dr Suresh played a pivotal role in setting up the general medicine service and restructuring the care model at Jurong Health campus, which improved the delivery of patient care. During the pandemic, he led the largest department at NTFGH, which received the second highest number of COVID patients in the country. He introduced several changes to the manpower distribution, which enabled the teams to efficiently deal with COVID as well as non-COVID patients, and support other teams like ED and ICU, as well as the operations at Big Box community care facility and dormitories. He has received the Public service transformation award in 2021 for being an exemplary leader, Public administration Bronze award in 2022, and multiple service quality and monthly star awards.

With a passion for teaching, Dr Suresh is the recipient of multiple teaching awards, including the National University Hospital System teaching excellence award (2015, 2017, 2018 and 2021), The Dean's teaching excellence award (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021), Best role model award (2013, 2014, 2018 and 2019) and Best PGY-1 supervisor award (2016 and 2017). As the Associate Program Director for advanced internal medicine from 2014 to 2020, he ensured a structured training program for the senior residents who are rotated to Jurong Health campus. He has written a single-author book on clinical consultation skills in medicine, and also an acute medicine manual for the benefit of junior doctors on call. He has written multiple review articles aimed at general physicians and general practitioners in peer-reviewed medical journals.  He is a former PACES examiner (2010 to 2022).
