Course Synopsis

This course equips clinicians with the knowledge and skills to deliver evidence-based nutrition care to critically ill patients. Participants will explore the physiological and metabolic changes of critical illness, approaches to nutrition screening and assessment, and the rationale behind energy and protein dosing. The course also covers enteral and parenteral nutrition strategies, as well as the role of specific nutrients and compounds in optimising outcomes. A complex case discussion bridges theory to practice, while a dedicated module on evidence-based practice empowers clinicians to critically appraise emerging literature. Ultimately, this course translates the latest evidence into practical, bedside nutrition interventions.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Determine appropriate energy and protein requirements across diverse ICU patient populations.
  • Develop and implement safe, evidence-based enteral and parenteral nutrition strategies tailored to the clinical context.
  • Evaluate the role of specific nutrients and compounds in optimising critical care outcomes.
  • Critically appraise nutrition literature to translate the latest evidence into practical bedside interventions.
