Biosketch
Adj A/Prof Ira Sun joined Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) in 2011 as one of the institution's two founding neurosurgeons. A graduate of the National University of Singapore, he completed his initial neurosurgical training within the National University Health System (NUHS) before pursuing advanced training at the world-renowned Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, UK. He maintains a diverse practice managing a wide range of adult cranial and spinal conditions, with particular interests in skull base work, minimally-invasive spinal techniques, and surgical technologies.
Adj A/Prof Sun combines clinical practice with a strong commitment to medical education, actively contributing across teaching and learning, programme design, assessment, and mentorship at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In his previous role as lead for Undergraduate Education in Surgery, he guided the department to achieve the prestigious Clinical Training Excellence Awards for both Phase III and V Surgery, celebrating the department's teaching excellence for two consecutive years. In recognition of his individual contributions to undergraduate teaching, he received both the NUHS Teaching Excellence Award and was placed on the NUS Dean's Honour Roll for Teaching Excellence, awarded for outstanding teaching and mentoring of students over three consecutive years. He currently serves the broader medical school mission as Core Faculty in the Office for Students at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS, where he leads mentorship administration and experiences for medical students across the school.
Adj A/Prof Sun concurrently serves as Associate Programme Director for the Singapore Integrated Programme for Neurosurgery, leading NUHS's contribution to this national residency training system. He was recently recognised with the 'Outstanding Faculty Award' in 2024, conferred by the SingHealth Residency Office.
His personal passion for continued learning in medical education led him to complete a Master of Science in Health Professions Education at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions, School of Healthcare Leadership, in Boston, USA.
Beyond education, Adj A/Prof Sun supports the institution through various administrative responsibilities, including serving as Chairperson of the Surgical Skills Laboratory Subcommittee, Chairperson of the JurongHealth Medical Devices and Procedures Committee, and Clinical Lead for three workgroups under the Medical Equipment Renewal Steering Committee.
