Dr Suresh graduated in 1992 from the University of Madras, obtained his MD degree in 1997, and the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2000. He trained in rheumatology at Edinburgh and obtained the certificate of completion of specialist training (CCST) in 2005. He was conferred the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 2009. He worked as a Consultant Rheumatologist in the United Kingdom for seven years before moving to Singapore in June 2012.
His notable achievements include establishing the general medicine service, which now receives more than 70% of the admissions, contributing to restructuring the acute care model and opening of the acute medical unit, leading his team to provide an efficient response during the pandemic, improving manpower productivity, and creating a nurturing environment for junior doctors. He received the Public service transformation award in 2021 for excellence in leadership, Public administration Bronze COVID-19 award in 2022, and Public administration Bronze award in 2024. He has also received multiple service quality, patient experience ambassador, and monthly star awards.
Dr Suresh is a teacher par excellence. He has received the National University Hospital System teaching excellence award and the Dean's teaching excellence award more than a dozen times over the past twelve years. He has authored two single-author books in medicine that are sold around the world, including one on clinical consultation skills and another on clinical communication skills, covering the entire breadth of medicine. He has also written an acute medicine handbook for junior doctors. As the Associate Program Director for advanced internal medicine from 2014 to 2020, he ensured a structured training program for senior residents who rotated to Jurong Health campus. He served as a PACES examiner in the UK from 2010 to 2022 and co-chair of examiners in Singapore in 2020 and 2021 when the pandemic restricted the entry of external examiners from the UK.
On the academic front, he has more than 35 publications in peer reviewed journals. He has written multiple review articles and contributed to development of several clinical guidelines. He played a crucial role in implementing the pharmacogenomics project at NTFGH, conducted the “We care” training for his department colleagues in 2024 to foster an outward mindset, and delivered the basic palliative crash course in 2025.
