Biosketch

Dr Tan Yi Quan is a dual-fellowship accredited Urologist who consults and operates across all 3 major hospitals of the National University Health System (Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, National University Hospital and Alexandra Hospital). Dr Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2013 as the top Surgery graduate, and was awarded the First Mekie Book Prize and Distinction in Surgery. In 2015, he received Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In 2020, he was conferred the Master of Medicine (Surgery) from NUS. Dr Tan was selected to represent the NUHS in MOH's Singapore Chief Residency Programme for future leaders in 2022. Dr Tan is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. Dr Tan completed an advanced Endourology Fellowship at the high-volume First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University in 2024 under Professor Zeng Guohua, a world-renowned kidney stone expert. In 2025, Dr Tan was awarded the prestigious Japanese Urological Association Asian Scholarship and completed advanced training in Focal Therapy for Prostate Cancer at Tokai University Hospital in Japan under Professor Sunao Shoji.

Dr Tan's subspeciality clinical and research interests are in Minimally Invasive Surgical Therapy (MIST) for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), Personalised Care for BPH, Prostate Laser Enucleation (HOLEP) and Minimally Invasive Stone Surgery. Dr Tan is a key member of the dynamic Endourology team at NTFGH, who are frequently the earliest adopters of new BPH and Stone surgical technology and concepts regionally. In 2023, the team pioneered the use of suction devices for safer and more efficient kidney stone surgeries in Singapore. Since then, they have been instrumental in promoting the use of the technology and training other Urologists locally and regionally. Dr Tan leads the BPH MIST programme at his centre, offering iTIND, Rezum and Urolift therapies. In 2024, Dr Tan was the first Urologist in Singapore accredited to perform the novel iTIND procedure for BPH. Dr Tan has been featured in the Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao newspapers for his pioneering work in iTIND and Personalised BPH care.

Dr Tan is passionate about medical education. Dr Tan is an invited Associate Board Member of the esteemed Asian Urological Society of Endoluminal Surgery and Technology. He actively contributes to the field of Urology through his regular involvement in various international workshops and conferences. In 2024, Dr Tan was awarded the prestigious NUHS Teaching Excellence Award. He is a Senior Clinical Lecturer with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS, and a Core Faculty member of the NUHS Postgraduate Year Residency Programme. As part of the Medical Education Distinction Track, he pioneered the Informed Consent Workshop for final-year medical students, and was awarded the Scholar Award at the Asia-Pacific Medical Education Conference.

Dr Tan strongly believes in personalising care to each patient, and has received several national and hospital service awards for patient care, including the prestigious Star Award at the Singapore Health Quality Service Awards (SHQSA) and the Patient Experience (Champion) Award. In 2019, Dr Tan was awarded the Fung Clinical Fellowship by NUS for overseas outreach and humanitarian work, being part of the NUH team who shared their expertise in living-related paediatric Kidney Transplantation at the Mandalay Children's Hospital in Myanmar. Outside of Urology, Dr Tan was awarded the prestigious Sword of Honour for the 80th Medical Officer Conversion Course as the top graduate during National Service, in addition to the Best Knowledge and Top Marksman Awards. He continues to serve as an Officer in the Republic of Singapore Air Force Headquarters.
