Biosketch

Dr Christopher Thong Zi Yi is an Associate Consultant in Department of Respiratory Medicine at Ng Teng Fong Hospital. He completed his Senior Residency in Respiratory Medicine at NUHS in 2026, following completion of Internal Medicine training. He holds Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom in Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine, as well as a Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine. He graduated with Honours from the National University of Ireland, Galway, School of Medicine.

His clinical interests encompass both respiratory and critical care medicine, including the management of common and complex respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, pulmonary infections, pulmonary hypertension and respiratory failure. He also has particular interest in acute respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation, airway management and the care of patients with complex medical illnesses in the intensive care setting.

Dr Thong is actively involved in medical education and has taught medical students from the National University of Singapore and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine since 2019. He has held several leadership roles within residency training, including Chief Resident in Respiratory Medicine and Co-Chair of the Graduate Medical Education Committee Resident Sub-Committee. His contributions to teaching and mentorship have been recognised with multiple awards, including the Department of Medicine Best Resident Tutor Award, Great Teacher (Interactive) Award and APSR Assembly Education Award.

He was awarded the Respiratory Medicine Best Exit Trainee Award in 2026 in recognition of his performance during his Respiratory Medicine Senior Residency training. He has also received multiple awards for healthcare quality improvement, including the QIX Sustainability Award and recognition at the IHF World Hospital Congress.

His research interests include critical care, respiratory medicine, medical education, healthcare quality improvement and the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in clinical medicine. He has published research and reviews in international peer-reviewed journals including NPJ Digital Medicine, Journal of General Internal Medicine, BMC Medical Education, Postgraduate Medical Journal and American Journal of Medicine. His recent research includes the development of reinforcement learning approaches for clinical decision support in acute kidney injury and renal replacement therapy.
