Adjunct Assistant Professor Tay Wee Ming is the Head, Division of Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery Service and he oversees clinical strategies and is responsible for the growth and development of the Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery service under the Department of General Surgery.
As the lead for Hepatobiliary (HPB) Services, he is responsible for overseeing the delivery, quality and operational direction of medical and surgical care related to liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and bile ducts. This ensures the high standards of care across outpatient, inpatient, surgical and oncological settings. He oversees surgical cases and provides guidance to junior surgeons. He also plays a key role in introducing and improving minimally invasive surgery programmes.
Dr Tay currently serves as the Chief Surgeon for Emergency Planning Services where he works with various teams to lead the creation of surgical emergency response protocols. Under his leadership, he spearheaded the development of guidelines, surgical team deployment models and resource allocation strategies. He also led surgical staff to be trained in crisis standards of care and rapid decision-making under pressure.
A committed educator, Wee Ming teaches the undergraduates at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and NTU Lee Kong Chien School of Medicine. He has been given multiple awards, including the NUHS Teaching Excellence Award, the NUS Medicine Dean’s Award for Teaching and the Clinical Training Excellence Award. He is also the Undergraduate Surgical Lead for General Surgery where he collaborates with teams to ensure the undergraduate surgical curriculum is aligned with national medical education standards.
Beyond clinical work, Wee Ming is active in the research arena and has been invited to speak at locoregional hepatobiliary and trauma conferences. He has published articles and videos on minimally invasive hepatobiliary surgery. He is a course instructor for trauma in regional courses as well as the Singapore Armed Forces.
