Adj Asst Prof Vijayan studied medicine at the University of Bristol and undertook his basic surgical training at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. He then spent two years in research in the UK, supported by a prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of England Fellowship Grant. Subsequently, he commenced specialist registrar surgical training on the South West of England Rotation and gained a broad grounding in general surgery before subspecialising in vascular surgery. He successfully completed the FRCS exit examinations in 2009, was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Training and was entered onto the UK Specialist Register.
As part of his fellowship year, he joined the Department of Vascular Surgery at the Royal Perth Hospital in Western Australia. The fellowship focused on complex endovascular and open vascular surgical management and Adj Asst Prof Vijayan was exposed to a great deal of vascular trauma - a result of an attachment with the State Trauma Unit.
After his fellowship, Adj Asst Prof Vijayan continued on at the Royal Perth Hospital as a locum Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon. He developed a subspecialty interest in lower limb salvage utilising advanced techniques gained from training in Leipzig, Germany as well as on courses in Australia and the UK. A passionate educator, he was also a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Western Australia lecturing final year medical students and supervised all departmental projects being performed by the trainees.
He moved to Singapore in 2013 to join the Department of General Surgery at Alexandra Hospital as a Consultant Surgeon to help develop the Vascular Service. He is currently a Senior Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH), Singapore, offering both open and endovascular management options to patients. Adj Asst Prof Vijayan is the Director of the Vascular Diagnostic Laboratory at NTFGH, which specializes in non-invasive investigations of vascular disease. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore and an undergraduate supervisor. His current clinical and research interests lie in the management of the diabetic foot, the use of drug-eluting technology in limb salvage and renal vascular access.
A member of several international Vascular Surgical Societies, Adj Asst Prof Vijayan is a founding member of the Society for Vascular and Endovascular Surgeons of Singapore as well as a founding member and membership secretary for the Society of Dialysis Access Specialists.
Adj Asst Prof Vijayan is well-published in international peer-reviewed journals on various topics in vascular and endovascular surgery and has presented widely and held workshops at international meetings both locally and worldwide. He continues his clinical and academic interest in vascular disease and utilises the knowledge and training from his research years to develop and supervise further research programs.
