Adj A/Prof Ira Sun is a founding neurosurgeon at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH), having joined the institution in 2011. A graduate of the National University of Singapore (NUS), he completed his foundational neurosurgical training within the National University Health System (NUHS), followed by advanced subspecialty training at the internationally renowned Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, UK.
He maintains a comprehensive and diverse neurosurgical practice, managing a wide range of adult cranial and spinal conditions. His clinical interests include skull base surgery, minimally invasive spinal techniques, and the application of advanced surgical technologies.
Alongside his clinical work, Adj A/Prof Sun is deeply committed to medical education and faculty development. He actively contributes across the spectrum of teaching and learning, including curriculum design, assessment, and mentorship at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. As former Lead for Undergraduate Education in Surgery, he led his department to achieve the Clinical Training Excellence Awards for both Phase III and Phase V Surgery for two consecutive years—recognising sustained excellence in teaching. In recognition of his personal contributions undergraduate teaching, he was awarded the NUHS Teaching Excellence Award and was placed on the NUS Dean’s Honour Roll for Teaching Excellence for three consecutive years.
He currently serves as Core Faculty in the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine Office for Students, where he leads mentorship initiatives and student development programmes across the medical school at a wider spectrum.
Concurrently, Adj A/Prof Sun also plays a key role in postgraduate training as Associate Programme Director of the Singapore Integrated Programme for Neurosurgery, where he leads NUHS’s contributions to the national residency training framework. In 2024, he was awarded the Outstanding Faculty Award by the SingHealth Residency Office in recognition of his excellence in residency education.
Driven by a strong passion and personal commitment to continuous professional development, he completed a Master of Science in Health Professions Education at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions in Boston, USA.
Beyond education, Adj A/Prof Sun contributes to institutional development through several administrative and leadership roles, including Chairperson of the Surgical Skills Laboratory Subcommittee, Chairperson of the JurongHealth Medical Devices and Procedures Committee, and Clinical Lead for multiple workstreams under the Medical Equipment Renewal Steering Committee.
