Simulation Programmes

Simulation-based education sessions consist of pre-brief, scenarios, debrief and feedback using a variety of simulation platforms. Clinical divisions and departments in JurongHealth Campus typically engage in manikin-based simulation and part task skills training.

Manikin-based Simulation

Participants perform simultaneous assessment, management and resuscitation of critical patients and apply Crisis Resource Management (CRM) strategies to achieve positive teamwork and clinical outcomes.

Part Task Skills Training

Participants develop technical skills required to attain clinical competency through part task trainers.

The following clinical divisions/departments in JurongHealth have developed training curriculum encompassing manikin-based simulations and part task skills training:


Advanced Airway Course

Course Objectives

  • Facilitate the importance of good airway management in emergency situations
  • Apply knowledge and skills in rapid sequence intubation so as to gain competence in daily practice
  • Troubleshoot pitfalls especially in oxygen therapy, bag-valve-mask ventilation and post-intubation care
  • Apply a smooth algorithm in preparing for rapid sequence intubation in both anticipated and unanticipated difficult airway management via simulation
  • Participate as a vital cog in the team approach to airway management via simulation

Course Outline

  • Scenario-based simulation training after briefing followed by debriefing

Training Methodology

  • Lecture demonstrations & simulation training

Target Audience

  • Junior Doctors
  • Nurses who have completed Basic Airway course
  • Respiratory Therapists from 2nd years onwards

Duration

  • 4 hours

Intermediate ECG Course

Course Objectives

  • Accurately interpret the ECG diagnos(es) of common arrhythmias and acute coronary syndromes
  • Delineate the role of nurses and other members of the healthcare team in initiating proper triaging and interventions for common cardiac emergencies using simulation-based scenarios

Course Outline

  • More complicated ECG rhythms like AF, Atrial flutter, blocks and their corresponding clinical correlations

Training Methodology

  • Lectures & in-depth case discussions in groups

Target Audience

  • Junior Doctors
  • Nurses who have completed basic ECG course
  • Respiratory Therapists from 2nd years onwards

Duration

  • 4 hours

Advanced ECG Course

Course Objectives

  • Accurately interpret the ECG diagnos(es) of common arrhythmias and acute coronary syndromes with concomitant review of ECG tracings from basic and intermediate courses
  • Delineate the role of nurses and other members of the healthcare team in initiating proper triaging and interventions for more complicated cardiac emergencies using simulation-based scenarios

Course Outline

  • Participants are immersed in an acute scenario entailing ECG interpretation followed by structured debriefing

Training Methodology

  • Lecture demonstrations, practicals & simulation training

Target Audience

  • Junior Doctors
  • Nurses who have completed Intermediate ECG course
  • Respiratory Therapists who have completed Intermediate ECG course

Duration

  • 4 hours

Human Factors & Team Psychology in Acute Care Course 

Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate effective teamwork, effective leadership, communication skills and situational awareness to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrate logical decision making with available information
  • Demonstrate safe treatment practices including calling for help appropriately, workplace safety and mutual support
  • Participants will learn to attend to all of the following at the same time:

Course Outline

  • The translation of clinical knowledge and skills of individuals into effective real world activity of a team at the bedside of an acutely ill patient

  • Lecture demonstrations, simulation-based scenarios & tutorials
